A Legacy Secured: The Log Joins the California Yacht Brokers Association

We're pleased to share news from our colleagues on the West Coast - the California Yacht Brokers Association (CYBA) has announced that The Log, California's premier maritime newspaper and a trusted journal of record for the boating community since 1971, has been donated to the association.

The arrangement brings together two California institutions that have each been around for more than 50 years, and it is designed to keep The Log an independent voice for boaters for generations to come.

Choosing Stewardship over Profit

Dave Abrams, owner and publisher of The Log, could have sold the paper to a commercial buyer. Instead, as part of his succession planning, he chose to donate it to the CYBA. He wanted a trusted steward that shares a deep commitment to California's waterfront communities, and he saw a respected non-profit association as the best way to protect the paper's legacy, preserve its local character and secure its long-term future. The Maritime Institute, The Log's parent entity, is not part of the transaction.

"Dave Abrams expressed his desire to secure a meaningful succession strategy for one of his most iconic and beloved publications," said Dean West, President of the CYBA Board. "By entrusting The Log to the CYBA, he has gifted our entire boating community a lasting legacy. We are honored by his trust and take on this responsibility with immense pride."

Editorial Independence Comes First

The CYBA represents California's professional yacht brokers, so both organizations have been clear that The Log's journalism will stay objective and separate from that role. The CYBA is setting up firewalls between association management and The Log's newsroom.

"Readers rely on The Log for objective news, regulatory reporting, policy analysis and harbor coverage," said Mark P. White, Executive Director of the CYBA. "CYBA is committed to maintaining complete editorial independence. News reporting will remain impartial and strictly separate from commercial or broker advocacy interests. The Log isn't changing its core mission; it is gaining a stronger foundation."

Investing in What Comes Next

Under the CYBA, The Log will receive new support to:

  • Expand its digital reach and modernize its online presence.
  • Grow its coverage across California.
  • Keep its print edition on the docks and in the marinas and yacht clubs across California

"Anyone involved in recreational boating in California has grown up with The Log," West added. "Through Mr. Abrams' generous contribution, our members and the broader maritime public are now joint caretakers of this West Coast treasure."

Why it Matters to All of Us

Independent, accurate reporting on regulations, harbors and policy serves every broker and every boater. We congratulate the CYBA and Dave Abrams on protecting a publication our industry has relied on for more than five decades.
