American Boating Congress May 9 – 11, 2018

Since 2013 YBAA has been a Co-Host of the American Boating Congress in Washington DC. As a Co-Host we are actively involved with the planning and implementation of this extremely important legislative event and we are committed to encouraging YBAA members to participate. Last year, YBAA Vice President, Mike Titgemeyer and I attended the event as the sole representatives from YBAA. This year, I will attend and we would love to see a much larger turnout of YBAA members as it is important that we are visible as active participants at ABC.

$70.6 Million Verdict Against Yacht Owner Underscores the Importance of Limited Liability Companies

The yachting industry is abuzz amidst the January report that a South Florida jury issued a $70.6 Million verdict against Island Girl Ltd., a Marshall Islands company that owns the Motor Yacht Endless Summer. Although the circumstances surrounding the case are now widely known throughout the industry, in summary, a crew member onboard Endless Summer was raped by another crew member. The victim sued Island Girl Ltd. for negligence in failing to provide a safe working environment among several other things.

The Most Important Sales Conversation

There is a much overlooked aspect of sales success that is rarely talked about and people pay little attention to, it is: self-talk. The most important conversation is the one you have with yourself. The reason that conversation is so important is because the words and language you use both reveal and reinforce your beliefs about yourself and the world. Those beliefs dictate the action you take, or don’t take, and ultimately determine success or failure. If you have a problem selling, you more than likely have a self-talk problem. The difference between the top salespeople and everyone else, is that the top people became aware of their negative self-talk and beliefs and reprogrammed their language and beliefs to positive ones, or, they were one of the lucky few who received positive programming right from the get go. The latter by the way is the exception, most of us received negative programming growing up. Either way, if you want to become a champion, you need to ensure that your self-talk is positive, upbeat, and supports you.

John Owsianik joined Gowrie Group in 2010 as a Personal and Yacht Insurance Specialist. John began his insurance career in 2002, and has experience in the Financial Services and P&C insurance industries on both the carrier and agency side. His focus area at Gowrie Group is advising successful individuals on their personal and yacht insurance needs. He is an expert in all areas of personal insurance including home, auto, boats/yachts, umbrella, and valuables. He enjoys working with yacht brokers, maritime lawyers, and surveyors, to help them meet their client’s needs.
